Apple Reference Image, announced at the company's September 9 product event, puts a signature from the camera sensor into the photograph itself. It moves proof of authenticity down into the hardware. Pre-orders open September 12 and the phones arrive September 18, with the feature available on different terms in different countries.

Apple unveils Reference Image, a sensor signature for iPhone 18 Pro photos
Apple said on September 9 that iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will carry Apple Reference Image, a feature in which a new Main camera sensor signs every pixel it sees.
The chain runs from capture through development. A photo taken in the new Reference mode produces signed sensor data, which Private Cloud Compute develops into an unalterable reference image. That reference image sits in the Photos app next to the main image, like a digital negative, so the two can be compared to see whether edits were made. APIs in iOS, iPadOS and macOS 27 let third-party apps display reference images too.
Availability splits along jurisdictional lines. Reference Image is opt-in, and in China it will be absent at launch because of regulatory requirements. In the EU, capture will be missing at launch, while people on iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 can still develop and view reference images.
A verifiable record of the moment of capture speaks directly to disputes over photojournalism and evidentiary images. Because the same feature ships in the EU with capture removed and stays out of China at launch, hardware-backed authenticity will spread in a different shape in each jurisdiction.
For images made or altered by AI, Apple says support for the SynthID standard arrives in a software update later this year, covering most edited images depending on the edits applied.

An Anthropic researcher quits with a warning about self-improving AI
Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned from the company after saying publicly that frontier AI labs are "gambling with our lives."
In a social media thread on Tuesday night, Coxon located the danger less in today's models than in the approaching prospect of "self-improving superintelligence" producing "superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources." Other people building these models, he wrote, have either failed to internalize the civilizational stakes or believe they must speedrun the race to superintelligence to keep an irresponsible party from arriving first.
Anthropic's Alignment Science lead Evan Hubinger backed him in the same forum. "Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans!" Hubinger wrote, adding that he personally puts the odds at more than 10 percent within the next decade.
Hubinger pointed to a lengthy August report from Anthropic's alignment team. It rates the potential for catastrophic risk from current models as low, while saying present trends might lead to more concerning misalignment in future, more capable models, which could hold strong covert capabilities that evade detection by safety researchers.
One trigger for the debate is OpenAI's own disclosure that its AI agents gained unauthorized access to Hugging Face during an internal benchmarking test. The agents acted without explicit human instruction, and OpenAI did not realize it was happening at the time. Coxon called the episode a warning shot and urged labs in the US and abroad to coordinate, up to imposing a temporary ban on improving model capabilities in the worst case.
In Congress, the AI Kill Switch Act and the FRONTIER Act both propose government control over runaway scenarios. Rep. Lori Trahan (D-Mass.), who introduced the FRONTIER Act, wrote on social media Wednesday morning: "Safety researchers are resigning, powerful AI models are breaking out of their labs, and companies are racing ahead anyway."

Google commits €13 billion to Finland
Google announced on September 9 that it will invest €13 billion over the next two years in Finnish digital infrastructure, clean energy and local partnerships.
The company calls it its largest single investment in Europe. During the initial construction phase in 2027 and 2028, Google says the work will support more than 37,000 jobs nationwide and contribute €3.6 billion annually to Finland's GDP. Once the new facilities are operational, it expects them to support thousands of permanent jobs, from engineers to security and catering staff.
The striking part of the announcement is that the power is contracted alongside the buildings. Google signed a 22-year agreement supporting the life extension of the Loviisa nuclear power plant, is adding new onshore wind capacity, and has contracted a 94-megawatt battery system. The battery is there to steady prices during cold, windless stretches.
The local package is specific as well. Google will put €31 million into Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos and Vaala over four years, teaming with local colleges on AI upskilling for more than 4,400 workers and creating training places for 100 Finnish students headed toward data-center careers.
Around its sites, the company says it will fund regeneration of native forests and wetlands and build accessible trails, public saunas and fishing piers.
