  • Apple hires staff from AI audio startup Huxe and licenses its technology, an EU filing shows

Two of today's three stories are about large companies bringing a startup's people and technology in-house. Nvidia is reported to be in talks over a deeper stake in Reflection AI, in which it has already invested, or a takeover. Apple, without acquiring Huxe, told the European Commission about a deal to hire its staff and license its technology.

AI infrastructure also landed on the front line. Ukrainian drones hit data centers run by the Russian tech giant Yandex on two consecutive days.

Nvidia in early talks to invest further in or buy Reflection AI, FT reports

Nvidia is in early-stage talks to invest further in or acquire Reflection AI, a US developer of open-weight models, the Financial Times reported.

Reuters and Bloomberg carried the FT's report. According to Reuters, the shape of a deal is still open and could include an acqui-hire, in which Nvidia would hire staff and license the startup's technology. An agreement could come within weeks.

Reflection AI was founded in 2024 by Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou, both formerly of Google DeepMind. Earlier this month it released Beam, its first open-weight model.

Nvidia has already invested $800 million in the company, Reuters said. Reflection AI's funding round in April valued it at $25 billion before the new money.

Apple discloses a deal to hire Huxe staff and license its technology

Apple agreed to make job offers to some employees of Huxe, a personalized AI audio startup, and to take a non-exclusive license to Huxe's intellectual property, according to a filing with the European Commission.

Apple notified the Commission of the deal on June 9, TechCrunch reported. MacRumors first reported the filing.

Huxe was founded by developers who had worked on the AI-generated podcast features in Google's NotebookLM, since renamed Gemini Notebook. Its app produced audio shows tailored to each listener. On May 21, the company announced it would shut the app down.

Hiring a startup's team and licensing its technology without acquiring the company has spread among large tech firms in recent years. TechCrunch suggests the structure draws less antitrust scrutiny than a full acquisition.

Ukrainian drones hit two Yandex data centers, including a YandexGPT training site

Ukrainian drones struck two data centers belonging to the Russian tech giant Yandex on October 8 and 9.

Yandex said on October 9 that its data center in the Kaluga region, southwest of Moscow, had been hit by Ukrainian drones and partly put out of action, Reuters reported. A day earlier, a strike shut down its data center in Sasovo, southeast of Moscow.

Yandex disclosed in 2021 that the Sasovo site houses two of its three supercomputers built on Nvidia A100 chips, which are used to train its YandexGPT model. The company declined to say whether they were damaged.

Users in Russia reported problems with services including the state-owned Russian Railways and the digital bank T-Bank, Ars Technica reported. Russia has been striking Ukrainian data centers with drones since late September, and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attacks on Yandex as a response in kind. Ars Technica noted that data centers have repeatedly become wartime targets in 2026, pointing to Iranian drone strikes in February that knocked out several Amazon data centers in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.
